Monte Cassino is a well known location to both WWII visitors as well as those interested in important religious locations. The abby has been completely restored from the tremendous damage inflicted during the war and tours of the war history are offered, as well as tours of the fantastic museum of religious artifacts.

Originally founded around 529 and was long an important power in the overall political scene in Roman history over the centuries. You can find a detailed history of the abby at the official site HERE.

In relation to the WWII history, you will also find the very beautiful Polish Cemetery nearby. During our visit we saw that outdoor mass is conducted there. You can also various guided tours and audio tours in the town of Cassino which sits at the foot of the mountain.

The Abby has been beautifully restored, and the sacred artifacts, which has been looted and carried off by the Nazi’s, were recovered and restored. The allied group, commonly known at the Monuments Men were instrumental in this recovery. The museum is extensive and takes an hour to two to explore.
